SAINT MARTIN

Fort Marigot
more known under the name of Fort Louis, was built in 1789 to protect French from the foreign invaders. To reach the fort, the simplest way starts behind the catholic church of Marigot. After 15 minutes walk, you will admire the surprising sight of the city and its neighbourhoods.

The Old House in Orient is an old, Creole-style home that is open to the public. It features an eclectic mix of artifacts.

Lottery Farm is an old plantation whose main house was built in 1721. Hiking trails are available to explore the area, and reservations are recommended.

Mount Vernont Plantation: Located between Grand Case and French Quarter, facing the vast expanses of Orient Bay and the old salt pond, the Mount Vernon Plantation has found a new life and well-deserved interest thanks to a highly eco-touristic project which has recreated a Caribbean oasis, offering visitors a chance to discover an actual agricultural enterprise of the colonial era, when coffee, spices, cotton, indigo, sugar, rum and many other goods were the wealth of the nascent local economy.

Fort Amsterdam
was built in 1632 over the remains of a Spanish fort and was the first Dutch fort built in the Caribbean. The fort can be reached through Divi Little Bay Beach Resort.

Fort Willem
changed hands between Dutch, French and British powers16 times from 1801 to 1848. Although not much remains of the fort, this location offers extraordinary views of Philipsburg and nearby islands. The fort can be reached through the road that begins opposite the entrance to Great Bay Beach Hotel.

Philipsburg's Courthouse
is located in central Philipsburg's Wathey Square. It was built in 1793 and renovated several times over the years. The Courthouse is currently used solely for the court, but was originally the home of the founder of Philipsburg, Commander John Philips. The building has been used in the past to house the council hall, the post office, the jail and a fire station.

CARNIVAL

Life’s rhythm is set by the activities of Carnival, or rather, on this island, Carnivals, as Saint-Martin’s carnival, which bathes the streets of Grand-Case and Marigot in bright colours and decibels at Mardi-Gras, is followed, during much of April, by Sint Maarten’s. For many years, concerts, dance contests, traditional Creole foods displays have brought together an ever larger population of revellers from all the neighbouring islands. The Great Parade is the climax of this superb extravaganza. Innumerable floats, bands and dance groups go through the streets of Philipsburg, drawing a happy crowd of onlookers, tourists and locals alike. An orgy of colours and sounds which make this, an unforgettable show of international appeal.

HEINEKEN REGATTA

Every year, held during the first full weekend in March, for three days and three nights, Saint-Martin / Sint Maarten becomes a magnet for the world of sailing. Around the island, three days of high-level regattas open to all categories of sailing vessels, from the lightest catamaran to the largest boat. A few prestigious sailors have seen their names posted on the winners’ rosters, along with those of talented unknowns who had come from “the four corners” of the world to challenge them in an atmosphere of good cheer and true sportsmanship. More than 250 boats participate in the race, with more than 1500 sailors from nearly 30 countries, including The Netherlands, Spain, The United Kingdom, France, and the United States.
On shore, every night, in Philipsburg, Simpson Bay or Marigot – wherever that day’s race ended – after the results, competition is replaced by merriment. Huge parties, organized by the main sponsor of this international event, gather the crews and an enthusiastic public around the food booths and the music show stages. The Heineken Regatta deserves the moniker its creators have given it: “Serious Fun”
